Beyonce’ Owned Vogue

Beyonce Vogue Cover

By now unless you’ve been under a rock, you had to have seen Beyonce’s flawless Vogue spread. The pictures she took were gorgeous, timeless, and told a bold story. However, it wasn’t just the pictures that had most people gushing, it was more of the behind-the-scenes that captivated audiences.

Not only did she have her kids with her enjoying this epic photoshoot but there’s an even bigger moment that came from this. She hired 23 yr old Tyler Mitchell as the first black photographer to ever shoot for Vogue in 126 years. This young man’s life will never be the same! Vogue along with most fashion organizations tend to hire people within their network and for the most part, their networks are not that diverse. Here’s what Beyonce had to say about that:

“If people in powerful positions continue to hire and cast only people who look like them, sound like them, come from the same neighborhoods they grew up in, they will never have a greater understanding of experiences different from their own. They will hire the same models, curate the same art, cast the same actors over and over again, and we will all lose.”

Thank you, I couldn’t have said that better myself! We have to continue to create diverse networks, especially in creative industries. Just imagine the type of content we would be able to produce, it would be a treat to the world. There is much work to do here as creatives. It is my hope that if Beyonce can open up an opportunity for an aspiring photographer then other celebrities, public figures, and decision-makers would consider doing the same.
